How Much Do You Spend On Your Geek Collections?
Personal Finance - Buying
Written by Dave Hilton

As Geeks, we take our collections (action figures, Hero props, autographed pics/posters, original art, authentic replicas, etc.) VERY seriously! We're always excited when someone asks about our collections and even more stoked when someone actually wants to see them. I'm also pretty sure we all have that one special piece that we're just dying to add to it (mine is either an authentic Green Hornet Black Beauty car- from the Original 1960's TV Show or the main piece of the Stargate).

But there's always someone out there with a bigger collection...and A LOT more money to spend on it! I save & save & save to be able to buy new additions for my collections throughout the year. My Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Thundercats, He-Man and other action figure & toy collection is, in my opinion, pretty impressive. However, it's nothing compared to the pièce de résistance someone added to their collection during a recent Profiles in History auction...

It was this Panavision PSR 35mm camera that was used during principal photography for the first Star Wars movie in 1977! The winning bid- $625,000!!!! The cool thing about this camera is that it is fully functional. It also included the film magazines, motor, dolly and other gear. The winner could literally just buy some film & record the ultimate fan film with it!

I can't even fathom spending that much money on something for one of my collections. That kind of price tag is way out of my league (for now, anyway). I'll spend a few hundred dollars or even a couple of thousand (that I've saved for this purpose) depending on what the item is- but nothing in my collection even compares to this level! This is a screaming reminder that what I spend on luxuries could be considered a CRAZY amount of money to someone else.

So I have a few questions for you. What do you collect & why? What was the last thing you added to your collection and, if you're willing to share, what is the most money (a range is fine) you've ever spent on something in your collection?

I don't even try to collect anything because I'm generally late to get into anything vaguely popular. (Case in point: I just started watching Dr. Who a few months ago after years of hearing people talk about it.) There have been times where I've wished I had the money to buy the original paintings used as cover art on some of my favorite books.

It's NEVER too late to start a collection! Just put $5-$10 away each month!

It's not even really a matter of it being too late. Part of why I'm always late on pop culture is that it isn't the first thing on my list when I'm choosing how to spend my time or my money. It just isn't a priority to me.

I have A LOT of friends who collect knives, too. Some of them from simple pocket knives to CROCODILE DUNDEE type knives and then a few of them have (perhaps, unhealthy) obsessions with swords & axes.

It's kind of on the backburner right now, but I have an ongoing collection of Magic: the Gathering cards. For a while, I was pretty into the Kidrobot vinyl figures for the Simpsons and Futurama.

Lately, I'm also developing a collection of signed Broadway programs.

Bryan- thanks for the comment. I never really got into card collections (except for Garbage Pail Kids in the 80's). But I have more action figures than I know what to do with...I'd need at least two rooms full of shelves just to display them all.

BTW- if you happen to come across any signed Phantom of the Opera stuff let me know! That is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE show.

I encourage constructive criticism and conversation, but if you're going to act like a stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder- I'll be forced to banish you into the 8th Dimension (and I understand the Red Lectroids from Planet 10 are not very friendly)! Have FUN!
